Performer Policies

Mission Statement

City Theatre Company trains young performers in the craft of musical theatre, building the discipline, confidence, collaboration, and character that lasts well beyond the stage.

Behavior and Attendance Policies

Bullying

  • Bullying is defined as behavior intended to harm others, whether through exclusion, teasing, taunting, gossiping, hitting, kicking, or verbal/physical aggression.

  • Cyberbullying, such as harmful actions via emails, texts, or social media, is also prohibited.

  • All performers must treat others with respect and work together to ensure a positive experience.

  • We take any unkindness seriously. Staff will talk about it right away, and we may ask parents to help us solve the problem.

Performer Attire

  • While there is no strict dress code, performers must wear comfortable, movement-appropriate clothing suitable for high-energy activities.

  • Close-toed shoes or dance/jazz shoes are required at all times unless otherwise instructed.

  • Attire must not have any offensive writing or inappropriate graphics.

Attendance and Tardiness

  • Consistent attendance is essential for the success of the rehearsal process and the final performance.

  • We know perfect attendance isn't always possible, but missing rehearsals affects everyone in the cast and the final show.

  • Absences are excused at the discretion of the production team.

  • You are responsible for arranging transportation to each rehearsal and performance.

  • Guidelines: Performers should make every effort to attend all scheduled rehearsals.

  • Extenuating Circumstances: If a rehearsal must be missed due to an emergency or unavoidable conflict, staff must be notified as soon as possible.

  • Illness: If a performer is sick and contagious, they must stay home to protect others.

  • Tardiness: Repeated tardiness disrupts the rehearsal process and wastes the time of teachers and castmates. Performers are expected to arrive on time and ready to begin.

  • Consequences: Persistent lateness or absences may result in discussions with the performer and parent/guardian. In severe cases, it could impact the performer’s role in the production.

Prohibited Behavior and Items

Disruptive Behavior: Intentional disruption to production activities will not be tolerated. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Destruction of property.

  • Physical or verbal aggression.

  • Refusal to cooperate with staff.

  • Consistently starting arguments or fights.

  • Severe or repeated disruptions may result in dismissal from the production.

Obscenity: Mean, profane, or bad language is not allowed.

Search: To keep everyone safe, the staff may need to look through performer belongings. This may involve staff or security/law enforcement.

Falsely Reported Emergencies: Tampering with safety equipment or making false emergency calls is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.

Theft and Vandalism: Stealing or damaging property will result in disciplinary action. Parents may be held financially responsible for damages or misplacement.

Strictly Prohibited Items

  • Dangerous weapons, including knives or items designed to cause harm, are strictly prohibited. Such items will be confiscated, parents will be contacted, and performers may be sent home immediately.

  • The possession or use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, vapes, or controlled substances is strictly prohibited. Violators will be sent home immediately, and parents will be contacted.

Guidelines and Procedures

  • Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: The production celebrates diversity and is committed to an inclusive environment where all races, religions, genders, sexual orientations, and backgrounds are respected.

  • Internet & Social Media: Performers must maintain respect in all online communications referencing the production, cast, staff, and City Theatre Company. Posting vulgar language, harassment, or unauthorized photos/videos of others is prohibited. Violations may lead to dismissal.

  • Visitor Policy: Parents and guardians are welcome only during designated check-in and check-out times. Visits during rehearsal hours are discouraged as they disrupt the program.

  • Every role, from the cast and ensemble to the tech and administrative staff, is essential and highly valued for the success of the production. Collaboration and mutual respect across all departments are fundamental to our work.

Phones and Electronic Devices

  • Performers may bring cell phones for use before check-in and after check-out.

  • During rehearsal and instruction time, all devices must be turned off and stored away to prevent distraction.

  • Performers who need to contact a parent during the day must ask a staff member for assistance.

Tuition & Payments

  • Tuition can be paid in full or via a payment plan.

  • At the time of registration, please submit either the full payment or the initial installment.

  • Installments are due according to the schedule agreed upon at registration.

  • Tuition is non-refundable; exceptions are made only in the event of an emergency.

  • If you need to cancel enrollment, meaning that the performer is no longer able to or wants to participate in the production, you must contact City Theatre Company at least seven days before the first day of rehearsals to receive 50% of any payments made. If cancellation occurs later than seven days before the first day of rehearsals, you will not receive a refund.

  • If payments are made late, City Theatre Company reserves the right to accrue and charge late fees.

Health and Safety Guidelines

Medical and Emergency Care

  • In case of injury or sudden illness, staff will provide first aid and contact parents immediately.

  • For serious emergencies, 911 will be called first, and then parents will be notified.

  • All medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must be given to a designated staff member upon arrival and will be administered only as directed by a parent/guardian.

  • City Theatre Company is not liable for any injuries that occur during the camp. While the safety of students is City Theatre's number one priority, and we will never put students in potentially unsafe situations, accidental trips and falls can still occur. If they result in any injury, a parent will be contacted immediately, and City Theatre will not be held liable.

Food and Allergies

  • Performers can bring snacks each day.

  • Bringing a water bottle everyday is highly recommended.

  • To keep everyone healthy, avoid sharing drinks and nebulizers.

  • Parents/guardians must disclose all known food allergies, dietary restrictions, and medical conditions during registration. Staff will take strict precautions to manage known allergens in the space.

Behavior Management and Dismissal

Disciplinary Procedures

  1. Step 1: A staff member will talk with the performer about the behavior and what will happen if it continues.

  2. Step 2: If behavior persists, the Director or staff involved will involve parents/guardians for support and insight.

  3. Step 3: If problems continue, the performer may be asked to leave the production. Parents are responsible for picking up the performer, and no refunds will be given.

Immediate Dismissal Certain behaviors may result in immediate removal, including:

  • Physical altercations.

  • Possession of drugs, alcohol, or weapons.

  • Theft.

  • Endangering the safety of others.

Acknowledgment and Agreement

The performer and parent/guardian (if minor) affirms they have read and understood these policies. It is understood that no refunds are issued for dismissal due to disciplinary action or homesickness.
